As there have been so many excellent CD's/albums I've listed a top 20 this year but have included compilations as long as they featured new music (the one exception was "Soul Togetherness 2010" which does have old music on it but is mostly made up of new and recent stuff.) - If I had included compilations of older music "Backstreet Brit Funk", "Get Down with The Philly Sound" &amp;amp;amp;amp; "Philly Regrooved" would have been up or near the top!

Track wise it was tough deciding on a top 20 - or 21 as I couldn't decide which track to leave out so I had a tie for position 20! - and it really was a toss-up which one of the first four was my favourite! (And looking back over the last two years I feel that I got it wrong twice as the track I listed number two both years should have been top!)

Al Campos – New York feeling came out on his Old school loving album
in the second half of 2007 but it gained much more exposure in 2008
with its inclusion on the Soul Unsigned LP – Where I first heard it.
The Monkey Brothers – Losin' my head came out in December 2007 but I
didn't get my copy until January 2008 so I have included it.

ALICIA MYERS - PEACE OF MIND (Love Town)
It's the first week in December and this CD has just changes everything, not only the best Soul album of 2011 but one of the very best in any category! I of cause remember Alicia from her time with the group One Way as well as her solo material but I had forgotten just how good she is - possibly the best female vocalist around! - this is why this wonderful CD just blew me away. There are only ten tracks with the first and last ones being pretty good but the other eight range in quality from very good to incredible! This album is essential to any Soul music lovers collection particularly if you enjoy the early to mid 80's groove. Highlights include: Fallin' apart, Journey, Weekend, Higher & Fancy Dancer.

Another very strong CD from one of my favourite current singers. I really feel if Donald had been around making this sort of music in the mid 80's he would have been a big star but unfortunately the market isn't what it used to be for grown up quality Soul! If you liked Gary Taylor, Freddie Jackson, Lillo Thomas and Glenn Jones back in the day you should love this as it's a modern version of that great sound! Highlights include: Good times, Loving you today, In love, Take you home and Steppin' out.

If somebody had played me this album and said it was a recently discovered lost Stevie Wonder LP from the early/mid 70's I would have believed them! So if you're a fan of Stevie at his best you really do need to check this great little CD out! -And if you're not, what's wrong with you! - Highlights include: Say I do, What was once, Want to see the sun, Feel so high and Perfect world.

Maysa is without a doubt a great vocalist but for me she always seems to sound better when singing with Incognito than on her own albums. That being said this is a nice CD but for me lacked any real killer tracks. Highlights include: Get with me, Come dance with me and Night 'n' day

So at last we have the new Reel People album and although it's very good it's not a patch on the last one! - But "Seven ways to wonder" was exceptional so maybe that was too much to ask for - Still, it's packed with exciting tracks featuring some cool vocals most notably from Tony Momrelle sounding very "Stevieish"! The UK - and London to be more precise - proving yet again it's the home of 21st century Soulful-Dance as it should be! Highlights include: Love it, Tell me why, Star, Golden lady, The Tea and 80's love.

SHUYA OKINO - DESTINY (Village Again)
2006 was a great year for music and Shuya Okino's wonderful "United Legends" CD was for me the best album of that year. Well here we are five years later and we finally have the follow-up album and it's very much in the same vain and nearly as good too! Japanese Soulful-Dance/House at it's best featuring a great selection of vocalists such as Navasha Daya, Divinti, N'dea Davenport and Pete Simpson. Only available on Japanese import at the moment but worth every penny you'll have to pay for it! Highlights include: Still in love, Look ahead, Deep into sunshine, Just do it, Give your love a chance and let nothing change you.

SLOW MOTION REPLAY - HEAVY DUTY (SouLab)
Without a doubt one of the coolest CD's this year! Coming all the way from Japan - via Frances SouLab label - Slow Motion Replay are: Kenichi Yanai, Shinya Kusumoto and Takuya Ishibashi all DJ's and producers I'm told! This is the sort of album I have trouble describing - Lounge, Jazzy-Hip-Hop? - just let me say it is similar to The Visioneers - "Dirty ol' Hip-Hop" and DJ Day's - "The day before" CD's from a few years ago. Exciting, different and full of energy. Wonderful stuff! Highlights include: Think better, Warm, Tropical forest, Tell me a bedtime story, One step, Missing disk, Aqua and Down stream.

TOM GLIDE AND THE LUV ALL STARS - IN THE NAME OF LUV (Expansions)
A very strong CD which if I had to sum up (and I do!) I would say Earth, Wind and Fire meets the early/mid 80's sound! This album has real energy and is loads of fun!
Highlights include: Get it off, What's your fantasy, Can you feel it, Luv is comin' up and Come to me.

Hats off to BBE Records for this truly inspirational compilation which just came out of nowhere! I love Blue-Eyed Soul (If you don't believe me check out my two "Blue Eyed Soul Mixed Specials"), and if you do you must get this great compilation! It's almost unheard of to get 16 unknown tracks by unknown artists which are virtually all good! A real breath of fresh air! Highlights include: Eric Tagg - Living off the love, Jaye P Morgan - Can't hide love, James Walsh Gypsy Band - I've got the feelin' and Ian Wilson - Four in the morning.

I really underestimated the first volume of "Jump Start", I thought it was good but the more I listened the better it got! Well this one pretty much pickings up where volume one left off! Soulful-Dance and Jazzy beats with that "Soul Unsigned" quality throughout! (And I understand it's selling incredibly well too!) Highlights include: Seductive Souls - Is it love, Gizelle Smith - June, Soopasoul - Brand nu and Papik - Staying for good.

Two CD's for the price of one! Classy and dare I say it sophisticated Soul compiled - as the name suggests - by long-time and well respected Soul DJ Ralph Tee this compilation has some wonderful tracks on it but it also has some pretty dull ones too! But that being said the good ones really are very, very good so it is well worth a place in your collection. Highlights include: Phyllis Hyman- Let somebody love you, Charles Veal - New found love, O'Bryan - It's over, Splendor - Special lady, David Ruffin - I wanna be with you, Major Harris - Let me take you there, Ben E. King - Made for each other, Cheryl Lynn - Show you how and Bobby Lyle - Good inside.

Hats off to Joey Negro for this great compilation which is without a doubt the best of the series! In fact it's so good it reminds me more of Joey's wonderful "Disco Spectrum" CD's (which came out on BBE about a decade ago). Crammed with unknown yet great Disco and Boogie goodies! One for every collection! Highlights include: Jackie Stoudemire - Invisible wind, The J's - When did you stop, Junior Byron - Inch by inch, Project - Love rescue and Kocky - Just keep on dancin'.

I always await the end of the year with some excitement (and a little regret at another summer past!) as it is time for this "State of the art" Soul compilation to come out. Well I'm afraid much like the year Soul-music wise it is a little disappointing. There are still some good tracks and it may well make my top ten albums of 2011 but compared to the last few years it's not really in the same league! Highlights include: Shuya Okino - Give your love a chance, Kelly Price - And you don't stop, Mary Mary - Survive and Leon Ware - On the beach (AtJazz remix)

Last year's CD (The 2010 Summer Session) was so good I really doubted if Phil Driver could do it again this year, but he certainly has! Very much in the same vain and every bit as good this compilation is going to take some beating for album of the year. Capturing that "Back in the day" vibe - up-tempo yet cool Soulful-Dance - but most definitely in a 21st century style. This CD is unmissable! Highlights include: Moonshoes - Boogieland, Soul Continuum - Move into my groove, Max Sedgley - All around me, Katzuma - With time, Katie Cole - Back into the sun, Aphreme and JSOUL - Take your heart, Lovesound (feat. ADRIANA EVANS - WALKING WITH THE NIGHT (Expansion)
I must say that when I heard there was a new album from Adriana Evans I wasn't that excited as I found her previous one a little disappointing! But on the strength of this CD the lady's back, back back! Her voice as ever sounds great - even slightly 70's Lovers-Rockish at times - And the production is wonderful with more than a nod to Swing Out Sister particularly on the opening track. The whole album still has a very distinctive sound which I'm sure most of you are familiar with but on this set she is more like "Adriana with an edge!" (If you will!) So next time I hear there's a new Adriana Evans album on the way I'll not only be excited but at the front of the queue to pick it up. Highlights include: Waiting, Suddenly &amp; Never though.
One final thing, Is it just me or is "Weatherman" a very strange choice for the single?

I'm not 100% sure how to categorize this album as although House-music it is definitely not of the "four to the floor" pumpin" variety! This is more Deep-Jazzy/Soulful - and often mellow -House. A mixture of Vocal and instrumental tracks all featuring cool grooves and great keys too. Highlights include: Love is everything, So good (feel the joy) &amp; Destination,

If you love the Chic-sound this is a must for you! Four CD's of previously un-released tracks - Including 3 from the Chic produced Johnny Mathis album - as well as remixes and a few originals too. Jam packed with goodies! Highlights include Norma Jean - Saturday (Dimitri remix), Sister Sledge - Lost in music (Dimitri remix), Chic - My forbidden lover (12" mix), Fonzi Thornton - I work for a living (Niles Rodgers extended mix), Fonzi Thornton - I'll change my game, Johnny Mathis - I want to fall in love, Johnny Mathis - It's alright to love me &amp; Chic - Just call.

An album that started off strongly and then unfortunately lost it's way (for me at least!). The good track are strong but a lot of the others are too mellow or too "R&amp;B" for me! Highlights include: In love with you, Spend your life &amp; Don't waste time.

COOL MILLION - BACK FOR MORE (Sedsoul)
I know it's only the first week in April, but this great set has got me thinking that this may well be the best album of 2010! Much as Joey Negro - AKA Dave Lee has taken late 70's - early 80's Disco and given it to a new generation, Frank Rhle and Rob Hardt have done the same thing with the early - mid. 80's Boogie-sound! And boy have they pulled-out all the stops on this great, star-studded selection. I enjoyed the last Cool Million album - "Going out tonight" from 2008 - But this is so, so much better! Although there are still one or two "cheesy" tracks most are very good! Essential 21st century Boogie! Highlights include: Making love, Just dance, Back for more, Love the beat &amp; Sweet baby.

COOL MILLION - THE TOM MOULTON SESSIONS (Sedsoul)
Question: What do you get when you take one of the hottest studio bands around and combine them with the greatest re-mixer from the Disco-era?
Answer: A remix album that actually works or "Cool Million - The Tom Moulton Sessions"!
Way back in the 1970's when most of his peers' idea of a remix was to extend and slightly beef-it-up Tom Moulton led the way with his exciting re-mixes which not only extended but also enriched and often improved the music! Well over three decades on and he still hasn't lost his touch! He has taken ten tracks from Cool Millions 2008 "Going out tonight" album and has worked his magic! If you like the early 80's sound or just good Soulful-Dance this should be for you! Highlights include: Walk away, Musiq, Lift me up &amp; Get up on the floor.

DIRA - SOMETHING ABOUT THE GIRL (Expansion)
Indonesian singer Dira Sungandi certainly sounds like a very talented young lady but for me this album is all about Bluey's (from Incognito) amazing production! Sounding like a slightly more mellow Incognito set, so if you are fan of Incognito - and who isn't! - this album is a must! Real musicians - including Ski Oakenful, Matt Cooper and Omar - and grown up songs. A must! Highlights include: Time out of time, Let's go back, Daydream &amp; No more tears.

THE DRIZABONE SOUL FAMILY - ALL THE WAY (Dome)
A nice return from 90's band Drizabone - albeit with a new name! - There's not a bad track on the album although it does maybe lack a little bit of oomph at times! Well worth a listen! Highlights include: Never gonna stop the groove, No more sorrow, Lovin' U &amp; Real love (remake).

ERIC BENET - LOST IN TIME (Reprise)
This wonderful album came as a complete surprise and was not what I was expecting! Eric has done a wonderful job of recreating that 70's Philly/vocal group sound which I love so much - He's even got O'Jay's main-man Eddie Levert duetting with him! - on some tracks and has a great feel good 80's groove on others. Not one weak track on the whole CD! A real contender for album of the year and one not to be missed! Highlights include: Feel good, Always a reason, Paid, Stir it up, Summer love &amp; Good life.

ERYKAH BADU - NEW AMERYKAH PART TWO (Motown)

I recently had a pile of new albums to listen to and saved this one until last as the thought of it didn't thrill me at all! But it hasn't always been this way for me with Erykah, there was a time I loved her! Her first album in the late 90's was a real sensation and although not quite as obvious the follow-up was just as good. Unfortunately it started to go down hill a little after that! Album three although not brilliant had a few nice moments but album four - New Amerykah part one - was just awful! You'll be pleased to hear that this new album although not as good as the first two is a move in the right direction again! There's not really too much to say about it except that it's an Erykah Badu album but this time with a few good tracks! Highlights include: Window seat, Turn me away &amp; Umm hmm.

KEITH FERGUSON - HONEST I DO (Infinity)
I'm afraid I don't know to much about Keith Ferguson except he comes from Detroit and makes great music! Everything an independent Soul album should be and an essential purchase for all real music lovers - You can listen and download it from CD Baby for only $9.99 - Highlights include: Honest I do, How do I love you, Kinda blue &amp; Keep thinkin' about you.

FUNK 'N'STEIN - FUNKY MISSION (Soul Unsigned)
Very nice set from this Israel based 8 piece Soul/Funk group. A real band with real instruments that reminds me of the Jazzy-Funk sound of the late 70's. Ranging in styles from the Funky - like Parliament - to the Soulful - like Breakwater with a touch of Jamiroquai thrown in too!
Highlights include: All day long, I want your love &amp; The morning hush.

INCOGNITO - TRANSATLANTIC RPM (Dome)
A real return to form and a slightly different direction from one of
my favourite bands. I know I've been a little down on their last couple of albums, but it's not that they were that bad, it's just that they were not up to the incredible standards I've come to expect from
Bluey and the gang!
This great set gave me the same thrill as an Incognito album used to a few years ago when it was one of the musical highlights of the year! It's well produced and very much has that Incognito feel to it but where the last two albums have been rather like "Incognito by numbers" this is exciting and even edgy too! Featuring all the usual suspects plus a few special guests too including the great Chaka Khan! An essential purchase for all music lovers and a contender for album of the year! Highlights include: 1975, Gotta, Let's fall in love again, The song &amp; Tell me what to do.

Jamiroquai - Rock dust light star (Mercury)
Let me start by saying that I'm not too sure whether to add this as a recommendation or not, as it is without a doubt the worst album JK has ever made! But as I am such a big fan I've found things to like on it - but don't buy the Deluxe version (like me!) as the bonus tracks are very poor! So if you are a Jamiroquai fan do take a listen but if there is one of the previous albums you haven't got you'll be better off buying that.
Highlights include: Blue skies, Two completely different things &amp; Never gonna be another.

JD73 - PURE GOLD (Z-Records)
When I first heard this album I knew it was good but after living with it for a couple of weeks I can now appreciate just how amazing it is! I suppose you could say it sounds a little like The Sunburst Band meets Cool Million if you had to compare it but JD73 - AKA Dan Goldman from the UK, a multi-instrumentalist as well as producer - has a real strong sound of his own, a sort of modern take on the early '80's slightly electro Dance music I love so much. One of the must have CD's of 2010.
Highlights include: Fantasy, Be mine, Step by step, Dreams, Pure gold &amp; I see.

JONATHAN BUTLER - SO STRONG (Rendezvous)
This is the first of Jonathan's albums I've listened to since his rather nice debut in 1986 and on the strength of this fine set maybe I've been missing out! A nice mix of guitar and vocals that remind me of George Benson in the mid. to late '80's.
Highlights include: So strong, Feels so good &amp; Colour green.

KEM - INTIMACY: ALBUM III (Motown)
Very strong set from this ultra-talented artist who is without a doubt one of the finest vocalists around - and very similar to a young Lionel Richie at times! Staying in the mellow to mid-tempo range throughout but with a real energy that keeps it exciting.
All the tracks are pretty good but four are absolutely incredible! 21st century Soul at it's very best! Highlights include: When I'm loving you, Can you feel it, You're on my mind &amp; Golden days.

RICHARD EARNSHAW - IN TIME (Groovefinder)
U.K. producer Richard Earnshaw is probably more well known on the Soulful-House scene than the Soul scene but this fine set keeps both sides happy. Featuring many fine guests including Roy Ayers, Kenny Thomas &amp; Ursula Rucker amongst others. Although I must confess I'm not as wild as everybody else seems to be on this album it is strong throughout but for me maybe a little "Soulless"! Highlights include: Good love, Waiting &amp; In time.

THE RURALS - RURAL SOUL (Peng)
The Rurals are DJ/producer Andy Compton and his wife Marie who have been producing cool Dance music for well over a decade now from their studios in Devon. They have always featured chill-out tracks on their albums - which are for me the highlights! - and have now put them all together on this fine 21 track album. Jazzy, Soulful lush-grooves featuring real instruments along with synthesisers and cool vocals too. Essential!
Highlights include: Save it, Organic life, Messin &amp; Smokey jam.

Great new album from Germany produced by Rob Hardt of Cool Million fame. Not as obviously retro as Cool Million but still with a slight nod to the past! Back in the late 70's - early 80's the Jazz-Funk scene was huge in London - Sadly it seems to have almost been written out of history, which is very hard to believe as in London and the suburbs it was bigger than the over-exposed Punk scene and the New-Romantics too! - and the home grown Brit-Funk sound with it's rawness and bass-slapping was a very important part of it. So I was most excited to pick up this wonderful double CD from the ever reliable Joey Negro. A few well known tracks, a few that made me think "Wow, I'd forgotten all about this!" and many I hadn't even heard before! Essential! (Now where did I leave those Desert-boots?) Great double CD compilation (although the Japanese version has three CD's!) of Philly gems put together by the ever reliable Dimitri From Paris and proving once and for all that Disco did evolve out of the Philly-sound! CD one features originals and CD two great Dimitri re-mixes! This one is definitely worth buying for the great booklet alone let alone the cool music - A must! Highlights include: Dimitri Disco-Blend remixes of: Harold Melvin &amp; The Blue Notes - The love I lost, Philly Devotions - Hurt so bad &amp; Teddy Pendergrass - You can't hide from yourself.

A nice eclectic selection put together by Solar Radio's Ginger Tony. At times it reaches dizzying heights of quality and at others I was a little bored! Well worth checking out as the good tracks are very good indeed and this excellent compilation just keeps getting better! Sadly there isn't as much excitement about this great new compilation as there was around this years other Philly compilation - Dimitri From Paris's "Get down with the Philly sound" - which is a shame as it is every bit as good! we have 12 mainly not too well known Philly (but not Gamble &amp; Huff/Philadelphia International) gems all given the remix treatment by the undisputed king of the Disco/Philly remix Tom Moulton. (And I'm sure Dimitri would agree too!) He takes these Soulful tracks and extends them and gives them more dance-floor appeal without you ever really noticing he's done it! Essential! Let me start by saying this is so much better than last years album and is quite possibly one of the best of this great eleven part (so far at least!) series. An almost perfect mix of new, recent and old Soulful music and a real contender for album of the year.
There's not too much more to say except if you like the music here on Dazlingsoul you should love this compilation too. Essential!

Not since Morgan Khan's great "Street Sounds" albums in the early 80's have we had anything like this wonderful series. Regular compilations packed with new exciting Soul music and not the dreary, one-paced rubbish that some labels put out. Ranging in tempo and style but all with an energy that Soul and Dance used to have a few decades ago! And this latest volume is one of the best yet. So if you are on a budget and can only buy one or two CD's per year make sure they are from this collection! The sort of album I have trouble describing and rating too! To make it easy, if you enjoyed 4 Hero's "Playing with the changes" and the excellent Visioneers CD from a few years ago you should love this! Cool, often Jazzy Nu-Soul with more than a nod to The Mizell Brothers. Some tracks are not really my thing but lots are absolutely brilliant! Nice Soulful set from the U.S. Evoking memories of the great 1970's Blue-Eyed Soul albums. If you like the early Hall & Oats, Bobby Caldwell or even Richard Stepp (Who's great track "Caught up in a whirlwind" was recently re-issued) you're in a for a treat here! DARRIUS - CAN'T GET ENOUGH (Critical Sun)

U.S.A. singer/songwriter/pianist Darrius Willrich gives us the first outstanding album of 2009 and what a corker! A great set of slightly Urban at times and retro at others Soulful grooves with a cool Jazzy-vibe running throughout. You can hear many of his influences ranging from Stevie Wonder to Herbie Hancock and Don Blackman too - It also reminds me a little of Xantone Blacq (who did a great album in 2006!). DONALD SHEFFEY - SEE YOU TONIGHT (Weezie)

A very strong follow-up to one of the best albums of last year - "Let's be lovers" - from this talented New Yorker. Contemporary Soul as it should be with more than a nod to the past. If you like the mid-80's sound - dancers, mid-tempo or ballard's - this is for you! Donald's voice reminds me of Freddy Jackson at his best but on a couple of tracks he sounds very Luther-like! Recommended.

Highlights include: Tonight, Let's go away & Come and dance with me.

GEORGIE FAME AND THE THE LAST BLUE FLAMES - TONE-WHEELS A TURNIN' (Three Line Whip)

Almost 50 years on from his debut the king of Hip-Cool is back with a fine set of Jazzy grooves. The band sound great and Georgie's vocals - as well as his Hammond playing - sound as good as ever! Highlights include: All I know & BP club after midnight.

HEAVY - FIRST SESSIONS (Kindred Spirits)

Great 70's inspired set from this talented duo. Recorded in 2004 but only just out on CD - Although if you (Like me!) were lucky you would have picked up the tasty 12" EP a few years ago. This album includes all the EP tracks plus much more and is far better than the album of "new music" they had out a year or so ago. Many tracks have a bit of a Roy Ayers feel to them. Recommended. Highlights include: She who knows, Do for you & Wonderlove (both original and Jazzanova remix).

LIQUID SPIRITS - MUSIC (Kindred Spirits)

Nice mainly mellow set which is slightly on the "Organic" tip. (But don't worry unlike many "Organic Soul" albums this is NOT dreary and one-paced!) Some great playing and strong vocals too. Sounding very similar to The Rebirth at times with a 70's summery vibe. Highlights include: Say it ain' t so, A little more & Music.

MARCELL & THE TRUTH - SYMBOLS (Oakhill)

The lucky ones amongst you would have bought the last album from this great group - "Hopes too high" in 2006. Well although this isn't quite as good as that it is another winner! Gospel-tinged "real" Soul - Similar to The Rance Allen Group or even early Frankie Beverly & Maze - that just keeps getting better for listening. Highlights include: Can't wait, All I know & Lost in the moment.

MARC STAGGERS - THEN AND NOW (Soulchoonz)

After listening to the first two tracks on this CD I thought "Wow!, this may well be the album of the year!" Unfortunately most of the other tracks although very good are not quite up to the same level. But this is still a very strong album! Marc's voice is more like Luther Vandross than anybody I've ever heard and a lot of the songs are very "Lutherish" too! Highlights include: Give you all my lovin', Can't get enough of this groove & When I think about your love.

MAYER HAWTHORNE - STRANGE ARRANGEMENT (Stones throw)

A real throwback to the late 60's early 70's vocal groups from this talented L.A. based singer/multi-instrumentalist and producer. If you liked the recent Raphael Saadiq album or the more Soulful stuff on the last Robin Thicke set you should love this! Highlights include: A strange arrangement & Maybe so maybe no.

M SWIFT - EVENING SUN (Pony Canyon)

Great Jazzy-Dance album from Japan featuring many great vocalists including Tony Momrelle - Giving the set a real Incognito feel. If you like DJ Kawasaki you should love this too. My only slight criticism is that like many Japanese Dance/House albums it is a little "clean" production-wise and could do with maybe some rough-edges or maybe even more Soul! But that said it is very strong throughout and highly recommended. Highlights include: Evening sun, Joy of life, Time & Come freak with me.

Strong set from this talented New Zealand born and London based saxophonist/producer. Ranging in styles from Jazz (old and NU) to Soul, R&B and Soulful-House too. Featuring some nice vocals from Marlena Shaw, Vennesa Freeman and Tama Waipara. Highlights include: Tell me what you're feeling, Today & Talkin' around.

RASMUS FABER - WHERE WE BELONG (Farplane)

Fine set from this Swedish producer/pianist who is probably more well known as a re-mixer. Ranging in style from House to Jazz with a little Nu-Soul too. Featuring some nice female vocalists including Dyanna Fearon and Emily McEwan. Similar in style to The Kyoto Jazz massive at times. Recommended! Highlights include: Give it to me, Na minha terra & Any way.

RICHARD ALEXANDER DAVIS - LOVIN' YOU DIRECT (Love Town)

Nice album from the U. K. which reminds me of the early 80's British JazzFunk/Soul sound of maybe Central Line - I'm not sure if it's Richards voice or the excellently simple production sound, but either way it's a good sound! When I first put it on I thought this set was O. K. but the more I hear the better it gets - In fact it's shaping up to be one of the best albums of the year! Recommended! Highlights include: High from your lovin', Back in love, You've changed & Guessin'.

ROOT SOUL - ROOT SOUL (Geneon)

It must be over two years since I got a copy of Root Soul's "Spirit of love" on a compilation album, well at last their own album is out and it's pretty good too!

At times it reminds me of Reel People's first album "Second Guess" from a few years ago and at others something from the mid. to late 70's. Jazzy at times but good throughout! Highlights include: Spirit of the sun, Sky high & Feeling good.

SHUYA OKINO - UNITED LEGENDS MORE REMIXES (Geneon Japan)

I should start by saying that I am not usually that wild on these remix albums - Often they take a great set and make it sound average at best (If you don't believe me check out the recent Reel people remix album!). And as I loved Shuya Okino's great 2006 album so much I put this one on with some trepidation. But was pleasantly surprised - This wonderful selection although not as good as the great original is still well worth having - In fact one or two tracks are even better! It just goes to show what really talented remixers who understand the music can do. Cool intelligent Dance music - A must! Highlights include: Shine (Pirahnahead remix), Summer love (Root Soul remix) & Thank you (Kyoto Jazz massive House edit).

(THE) SUNBURST BAND - REMIXED (Z-Records)

As I was about to right this review I had a dilemma, Is an album of 26 tracks (This one!) which over half of are good, as good as an album of say 10 or 12 tracks which are all good? I decided yes! So this excellent set get a great review! An outstanding selection of remixes which brings out the best in the strong tracks and improves the weaker ones from The Sunburst Bands previous albums - Perfect! Not every track works for me but lots do. So if you are a fan of good Soulful-Dance, 21st century Disco and Boogie this is a must! Highlights include: Sitting on top of the world (DJ Meme mix), He is (Joey Negro Club mix), We can live for ever (Simon Grey mix) & I know you care (Joey Negro Club mix)

THOMAS G - INFLUENCES (Thomas G Productions)

If you love that early 80's sound (And who doesn't!) this is the album for you! It reminds me of the recent retro-ish Cool Million album. Thomas is a multi-talented musician/producer from France who shares the vocals with Swedish singer Swade. Recommended! Highlights include: It's gonna be you, Say you'll be & Feels like you.

TORTURED SOUL - DID YOU MISS ME (Dome - Europe / Columbia - Japan)

Strong second album from this talented trio, who seem to have that rare talent of appealing to both the Dance/Club crowd and the Soul crowd too. Combining many elements including 80's Electro, Funk, Disco and Soul with contemporary production. 21 st centaury Soulful-dance at it's best. Every tracks a winner! Highlights include: Home to you, In my fantasy & Unsteady.

When I first put this album on from L.A. based producer Astral 22 I really didn't know what to expect. well it started off OK but not outstanding and then as I got into the set it just seemed to get better and better! V.A. SOUL TOGETHERNESS 2009 (Expansion)

So, it's that time of year again, nights drawing in, summer just a fond memory and the latest Soul Togetherness compilation in the shops. Musically this is usually one of the highlights of the year, but unfortunately not this year! Although not a bad selection it falls a little short of what I've come to expect in recent years. The torch seems to have been passed to the Soul Unsigned series which is now THE essential new Soul compilation series! All that said and done this is still a nice selection of Soul and Soulful-Dance old and new. Highlights include: My dream came true - Root Soul, Only one I need to love - Tavares, Some of the things - Los Charlie's Orchestra & Everything is good 2night - Kloud 9.

More top quality new and exciting Soulful music from those nice people over at the UK's hottest record label. For me not as strong as volume 2 but still marvelous! An international selection with an upbeat energy that reminds me of what Soul and Jazz-Funk albums used to be like back in the day! Highlights include: You've changed - Richard Alexander Davis, Next to me - Cool Million, In love with you - Chris Youngblood & Delightful Jazz - Daniel Nelson & Mark Drummond.

WILL DOWNING - CLASSIQUE (Concord)

Strong album from the man who may well be the number one vocalist around! The title is a little misleading as this is not an album of cover-version (although it does have three). It's mainly new, well produced soul at it's very best with a nod to the past. At times this really is a great album and recommended. Highlights include: Time, Something special & Love suggestion.

ALEX LATTIMORE - PROMISE (AlexJDot))

Nice mellow Soul album from this rich-voiced singer (Who also plays many of the instruments too) - He sounds like a cross between Walter Jackson and Will Downing. You might know Alex from his work with the group Jiva. Great modern Soul with a wonderful live Jazz-tinged band. Highlights Include: Kissing you, Lullabye & A million Ways.

BENNSON - LET THE LOVE (Raw Fusion)

Strong mainly up-tempo set recorded in Sweden (although Bennson is Australian). Going down a similar rout to the Sunburst Band - A little commercial at times but all very good. Highlights include: Whatever it is, Let the love, Fly high & I need music.

COOL MILLION - GOING OUT TONIGHT (Expansion)

Nice mainly up tempo set from Denmark which re-creates the mid-80's sound of groups like Midnight Star, Atlantic Star, Mtume & Kleeer. Not a bad track on here. Highlights include: Going out tonight, Get up on the floor & Lift me up.

DJ KAWASAKI - YOU CAN MAKE IT (Columbia)

Nice Japanese House album from this accomplished DJ/producer. Lacking in real thrills but good throughout. Highlights include: Elevate your mind & Bright like light.

DONALD SHEFFEY -LET'S BE LOVERS (Donald Sheffey)

Really strong Soul album from this talented New Yorker. Featuring a great mix of Mid-tempo, dancers and ballard's too with an early 80's feel at times. Donald's voice reminds me a little of Freddie Jackson at times. Highly recommended. Highlights include: Just because, Sweetheart & Let's be lovers.

DON-E - NATURAL (Dome)

Cool set from this London based Singer/producer who some may know from his more Urban and Hip-Hop production work. This on the other hand is 21st century Nu- Soul at it's best - Cool, Jazzy and Loungey too. I was a bit late coming to it, but what a great album! Highlights include: Addictive luv, Love shine in & Drive.

Great Jazzy-Soulful-Dance set from France - Although only available as a Japanese import at the moment. Containing all the single releases of the last couple of years and a lot more too. Not to be missed. Highlights include: Cool Summer, Hard to say, I think of you & My music.

Nice (but by their very high standards a little disappointing) new album from Bluey and the gang. Not a bad track, but somehow lacking in frills. Well worth a listen. Highlights Include: I've been waiting, Never look back & Feel the pressure.

JAZZANOVA - OF ALL THE THINGS (Verve)

Jazzanova does Soul! (And a little Jazz too!) Something rather different for these talented Berlin based DJ/producers and it works. A retro set with many fine vocalists the best of which - for me at least is Paul Randolph. Highlights include: Let me show ya & Lucky girl.

MARC EVANS - THE WAY YOU LOVE ME (Defected)

Wonderful mainly Soulful-House set with the emphasis on Marc's powerful vocals. Great production using loads of familiar rifts. And although many of the tracks have already been released as singles it's good to hear the album versions. Highlights include: The way U love me, I don't want you anymore, Am I crazy & This thing called love.

One for the real Disco lovers. Brand new Disco sounding like it was recorded in the 1970's - In an analogue studio using a real orchestra and what sounds like period synthesizers too. Very similar to Patrick Adams in about 1978. Highlights include: Keep on doin' whatcha doin', Feel the music & Makin' love.

RAPHAEL SAADIQ - THE WAY I SEE IT (Sony)

Nice retro set - In fact if somebody had played this to me and said it was a Motown album from the end of the 60's I would have believed them. Most tracks sound like they could have been recorded by The Temptation, Smokey Robinson and the stand out track (Never give you up) by Marvin Gaye. Not a bad track on here. Highlights include: Just one kiss (feat. Joss Stone) & Never give you up (feat. Stevie Wonder)

REEL PEOPLE - SEVEN WAYS TO WONDER (Papa)

Great U.K. Soul/Dance album. Even better than their last one! (And that was pretty special too!) Not a bad track on here. This really is Soulful Dance at it's best - Soulful and Jazzy too. Everyone should have a copy of this great album in their collection. Essential. Highlights include: Outta love (feat. Omar), So Amazing, Rise and fly & Perfect sky.

Nice upbeat set from this U.K. group (although originally released in Japan). Sounding modern but with an early 80's feel - similar to Incognito at times. Highlights include: Dial L for love & Interstellar.

SWING OUT SISTER - BEAUTIFUL MESS (Promo)

Nice cool and easy Jazzy Soul album from this consistent U.K. duo. Wonderful arrangements (similar at times to the lush 70's soul tunes.) with Beautiful vocals. Not a bad track on here (although the two re-mixes do let it down a bit). Highlights include: All I say, all I do, Out there & Beautiful mess.

TOM JONES - 24 HOURS (S-Curve)

Love him or hate him you have to admit that the man has got a great voice. And on this album he also has good songs and wonderful production too! Ranging from the contemporary to sixties (and dare I say it Northern-Soul) sounding tracks with a touch of the Swing Out Sister style production too. Very good. Highlights include: I'm alive, If he should ever leave you & In style and rhythm.

V.A. DIMITRI FROM PARIS - RETURN TO THE PLAYBOY MANSION (Defected)

The third installment of this great series. 2 C.D.'s of Soulful House, Disco, Boogie & Soul all mixed by Dimitri. ( CD 2 is surprisingly mellow.) Highlights include: Musique - Love massage, Fish Go deep - The cause & the cure, & Flowers - For real

V.A. GILLES PETERSON IN THE HOUSE (Defected)

Latest installment of this consistent series finds G.P. in fine form. A good selection of Soulful-House and underground Soul and Jazz Funk classics spread and mixed over 3 C.D.'s. My only criticism is that many of the older tracks are edited far to much (Sometimes to a minute or two - Why not put less tracks on!) Highlights include: Wahoo - Don't take it personal, Shuya Okino (replayed by Sleepwalker) - Thank you & Johhney Hammond - Tell me what to do.

V.A. INDEPENDENT SOUL DIVAS (Lola Waxx)

The title says it all! A nice album of new (or should that be Nu?) Soul and R&B, full of strong exciting tracks. Highlights include: Maya Neiada - I need a moment, D'Cheri - I'm alive & Rene Jones - Summer day.

V.A. SOUL ECSTASY (Expansion)

Ralph Tee puts together a great collection of his favourite late 70's and early 80's mid-tempo grooves. And what a nice selection - Ranging from the familiar to tracks you'll be amazed aren't played more often! Highlights include: Gayle Adams - Let's go all the way, Champaign - Can you find the time, George Duke - say that you will & Damaris - What about my love.

Four great tracks from different artists. Excellent Gentleman - Tonight alright, felix - Leave it all behind, Grooves back Productions - Blow your mind, Harambe - In the bone. Although all sounding very different, they all have a slight retro feel - Yet contemporary too. It is so nice to hear good up-tempo soul. A must!

Very good, exciting Jazz Funk set from this Macedonian (via U.S.A.) artist. It has a real late 70's early 80's British Jazz funk sound. But at only seven tracks (about 30 minutes) it is far too short. Recommended. Highlights include: We will never end & In the open space.

WOODY CUNNINGHAM - NEVER SAY NEVER (Woody Cunningham)

(Originally released in 1997)

A nice set from the former Kleeer main-man that proves he still has it all going on! If you liked that Kleeer sound from about 1984 this is for you. Highlights include: Never say never, Love is taking over & Remove your halo.

A nice Soulful-Jazzy set produced by and featuring Hamish Stuart (The Average White Band). Featuring the cream of Europe's session musicians and great vocalists too - Including Jocelyn Brown. Highlights include: Remedy & Hey Listen up.

ANANDA PROJECT - FIRE FLOWER (King Street)

Really good House/Lounge album that just keeps getting better and better. Highlights include: Fireworks, Stay as you are & Universal love.

Nice soul album. Although Ebony has an unusual (yet nice) voice (Like a slightly speeded-up Dione Warwick!) the songs work well. Highlights include: Second look & Merry-go-round.

KATHY DIAMOND - MISS DIAMOND TO YOU (Permanent Vacation)

Electro(ish) album with a nice early 80's feel at times. Highlights include: On and on.

LANU - THIS IS MY HOME (Tru-Thoughts)

Varied album from this southern-hemisphere artist. Touching all bases from Broken-beat, Jazz, latin, Nu-Soul, Hip-Hop & even House. Retro at times but modern too. Worth living with for a while. Highlights include: Rise & Shine.

METROPOLITAN JAZZ AFFAIR - METROPOLITAN JAZZ AFFAIR (Infracom)

Nice Jazz set from this French group. Highlights include: Drifting & Find a way.

RAW ARTISTIC SOUL - YOU GOT RHYTHM (Gogo)

Nice Jazzy Soulful dance set (with a slight retro feel at times). Highlights include: Zaab, Keep on shining & in their eyes.

V.A. GILLES PETERSON DIGS AMERICA VOL. 2 (Ubiquity)

Fine eclectic set of vintage Jazzy-Soul and Jazz rarities. Style wise this sits somewhere in between G.P.'s Jazz Juice and Black Forest compilations. Some great moments. Highlights include: Carris Cleveland - Make love to me, The Diddy's - Intergalactic love song, Steve Parks - Sadness in my Samba & Reverie - In every way.

V.A. MAIDEN VOYAGE (Compost)

Great selection from Munich DJ R. Truby reflecting music from his club night. 1970's/early 80's set of Jazzy Two-Step soul. Inspired choices. Highlights include: Toto - Georgie Porgy, Raw Soul Express - The way we live & Xavier - Love is on the one.

DJ Terry Jones puts together a nice selection (I like it more than the first one!) of Soul from the 70's to present. It really recreates the feel of the old Shorditch club night. Highlights include: Adeva - Don't think about it, Delegation - One more step to take & Ebonys - Do you like the wy I love you.

WILL DOWNING - AFTER TONIGHT (Peak)

Nice mainly mid-tempo (But with a nice edge!) album. Will's best for years. Highlights include: Will's groove & Lovers melody (feat. Roy Ayers).

DONALD McCOLLUM - U DON'T WANT MY LOVE (Dome)

Nice Soul album from Germany from this rich voiced Chicago singer. Great production which works best for me on the up tempo tracks. Highlights include: Lose my cool, U don't want my love & You're my everything.

D.J. KAWASAKI - BEAUTIFUL (Columbia)

Strong Japanese (mainly) House/Dance album. Not a bad track on it. Highlights

include: The love of music & Like thunder.

GERD - PERSPECTIVES (LEA)

Really strong Nu-Jazz/Hip Hop/Broken-Beat and Soulful set from this Dutch duo featuring some talented vocalists too. Sadly overlooked by most people but well worth a listen. Highlights include: Fire in my soul, In love with you & So real.

ISOUL8 - BALANCE (Sonarkollektive)

Wonderful Soulful, Jazz-tinged Dance/Electronica. Good throughout. Highlights include: Give it up, So simple & On my heart.

British DJ/producer with a great down-tempo House/Electronica set. Highlights include: In so deep & Love you better.

JIVA - SUN AND MOON (Expansions)

Great album from this talented USA band - Real instruments and wonderful vocalists.Has a slight Boss-Nova feel, Jazzy and Soulful with some dancers too.

Highly recommended. Highlights include: I realized, Daydreamer & Stars (Louie Vega mix).

This talented U.K. singer has been around a while but is his strongest set yet. Although a little cheesy at time it still has some great moments. Highlights include: Him & Sunshine girl.

KOOP - KOOP ISLAND (Atlantic)

Nice (although short!) Jazz album from this Scandinavian group. Great vocals and a real retro feel. (It was sadly missed by almost everyone.) Highlights include: Come to me & I see a different you.

KYLE EASTWOOD - NOW (rendezvous)

Nice Jazz album (from Clint's son). Worth a listen. Highlights include: September nights.

MARCELL & THE TRUTH - HOPES TO HIGH (Basement Boys recordings)

Nice Gospel-tinged Soul album (similar to The Rance Allen Group in places). Marcel's voice is awesome but the rest of the band are just perfect too! Wonderful. Highlights Include: Hopes too high, Breath love & Maybe I'm not the man.

Really great dance album from Japan. Shuya collaborates with a selection of todays hot dance artists. Every track is a winner! (Probably the best album of 2006) Highlights include: Thank you, Is it love, Love is the key & What would I do.

Good compilation of Nu-Soul from this Manchester lable. Highlights include: Eyes burn & New era by Oezlem.

Great Jazzy Hip Hop set (Has a Mizell Brothers feel at times) from U.K. DJ/producer Mark Mac (of 4Hero). Highlights include: Runnin', The world is ours, Dirty old Bossa Nova & Rollin' for the ride.

Strong double CD from this great U. K. latin-tinged Jazz-Funk/Soulful-House band. Highlights include: Let the drums speak, Have you got your bootz on & Just want to love you.

BRIGETTE - STARLITE LOUNGE (Expansion)

Wonderful Bossa Nova Soul set from this warm voice singer. Great cool mid-tempo vibe running throughout. Highlights include: Much to much, Star & Betcha.

Nu-Jazz with a broken-beat/ Down-beat feel from this British trumpet player (lots of vocals too!) Really good throughout, every track's a winner! Highlights include: Pressure valve & Corbenover.

EARTH, WIND & FIRE - ILLUMINATION (Sanctuary Urban)

Great return to form for arguably the greatest band of all time. Although this sounds like a contemporary Soul/dance album it also sound like vintage EWF too.

Every fan should have this in their collection. Wonderful. Highlights include: Lovely people, Pure gold, The one & Liberation.

Wonderful straight ahead Jazz set from this Scandinavian band. Has a retro feel and yet sounds contemporary too. Modern Jazz-Dance at it's best. Great playing and some lovely vocals too. Highlights include: Blue cycles, This could be the start of something (feat. Mark Murphy) & Three corners.

IAN MARTIN - THE WAY (Expansion)

Strong Soul and Soulful dance album from this talented artist and producer. It has a real early 80's feel at times and at others sound very contemporary. Highlights include: Release, Brother, You are & Movin' on.

Strong set from this UK super group. Wonderful arrangements and great vocals. Jazz-tinged Soulful-Dance at it's best. Highlights Include: We got music , Come away with me & When tomorrow brings you down.

JAMIROQUAI - DYNAMITE (Sony BMG)

Like all JK's albums this one is a mix of Jazz-Funk and Rocky-chart music But the Jazz-Funk is so good. With the possible exception of Incognito I can't think of any group or artist who has made so much cool music over the last 15 years. Although there are a few bad tracks this may well be their best album - The rest of the set is fantastic! Highlights include: Dynamite, Seven days in sunny June, Talullah & Time won't wait.

Great Nu-Jazz set from the trumpet player with The Five Corners Quintet. Sounding like it was recorded in the 1970's. Strong throughout. Highlights include: 1974 & Timber up.

MAXINE BRAHAM - IF (BKO)

Nice Nu-Soul set from the UK. For me at it's best on the more up tempo tracks but good throughout. Highlights include: Wherever, I wish & If.

POSTMODERN JAZZ (FEAT. ROY AYERS) - LOVE NOT TRUTH (PJCD)

Great slice of contemporary Jazz-Funk. Every tracks a winner. Each time I put it on I find a new favorite. Highlights include : Love not truth, Darkness into light, Everything & Another kind of culture.

Maybe the best album for over twenty years. As cool a it gets - Jazzy, Funky, Soulful and danceable too. This really is modern Soul/Dance music at it's best. Nice set from this legendry artist. Although he has recorded some great material with others this is without a doubt his best solo album for over twenty years. Keeping that great 70's feel but bringing it right up to date. Highlights include: I wanna feel you, Ft. Dupont park & Everybody loves the sunshine (feat. Erykah Badu).

STEVIE WONDER - A TIME TO LOVE (Motown)

Great return to form for this all time great. Without a doubt his best album for about twenty five years. At times this is Stevie at his best. Highlights include: The sweetest somebody I know, Moon Blue, My love is on fire & So what the fuss.

V.A. GET THIS PARTY STARTED (Expansion)

Chris Hill's great collection of "New school Caister anthems". Really nice original selection of tracks. Recommended. Highlights Include: 66 mellow - New Version Of Soul, Blowin' my mind - Solo, Just you and me - Sean Oliver & Magic - D'Influence.
